The Farewell

The Farewell depicts the abandonment of the brig Advance on May 31, 1854. Kane and his crew, unable to move her from her ice-berth, abandoned ship after two years in the ice of Kane Basin. Eighteen of the nineteen men made it back to civilization by dog-sled, skiff and foot.
