The Advance, Second Winter; 1855
The brig Advance, fashioned as an igloo. Kane learned survival techniques from the Inuit Eskimo of Etah. After visiting their igloos, he learned to incorporate their ancient traditions in his own ship. He covered the walls with moss and kept a small whale-oil flame burning amidships. He re-engineered the entry to the living quarters so that it was entered from below |
